One of the things that drew me to this apartment was the fact that it had a bit of a “real” entryway…. or at least the floorplan to carve one out! I knew from the start that I was going to need a very slim console table and have been looking at various options for a few months.
Do you know how hard it is to find a table that is less than 13 inches deep? Lemme tell you… they aren’t exactly churning them out. So I decided that I was going to need to do something custom. Big money you say? You would be right! Room and Board was the option that I kept going back to but nothing was perfect, and as nice as their things may be– there were much more sterile looking than I wanted.
The redhead and I were at the Brooklyn Flea (which is a whole other subject in its own right!) and ran across a booth that had some very interesting pieces made out of reclaimed pallet boards and concrete. The guy running the booth turned out to be the builder and designer of the pieces. His name is Don, his company is Fat Dog Fabrication (cute, right?), and he was very patient in answering my questions and showing me what he did. What I ended up doing was taking a basic idea from a table that he already had and making it my own. I showed up one day at the flea a month or so after we first met and showed him my sketch; which I wish I had thought to take a picture of so you could see how rough it was! Don worked up an estimate while we walked around the flea and was even awesome enough to send me a google sketch up of my design a week later.
So… are you curious to see it? Ok, ok!:
I’m not sure if I should say that I am in love with a piece of furniture but I am in LOVE with this table! I love that it is (of course) the perfect size, love the mix of materials, and the quality in person is outstanding. The top is concrete, the middle shelf reclaimed oak, and the frame is steel. It ended up costing about $400, including a bench made out of the same reclaimed oak, and Don was kind enough to hand deliver it; which is always a headache in the city. For me– that’s not bad at all to get exactly what you want in a beautiful piece that will last. I feel like I’ll always be able to use it, even when we aren’t in this particular apartment.
But wait there’s more.
Guess what.
Don named the design after me! And he said that it has been very popular!
Yep… you could have a Vaydre table of your very own….
